Bria Skonberg

Performing Friday and Saturday

Bria Skonberg, a Vancouver BC based jazz trumpeter and vocalist, has been performing on stage for 20 years.  She started studying piano and dance, but switched to trumpet at age eleven.  She continued her interest in jazz receiving a degree in Jazz Performance from Capilano College.  In 2006 Bria was the recipient of the CBS Jazz Award of Merit.  In 2007 she performed in 20 Traditional Jazz festivals in the US, Europe, Canada and Japan—and won the coveted Kobe Award presented at the Breda Festival in Holland.

In 2008 she performed at NCJF and was a guest on Jim Cullum’s Riverwalk Jazz, as part of the “new generation of gifted jazz musicians.”  In 2009 Bria was one of four performers selected for an International Young Artists’ Showcase at the Jazz á Juan Festival in Antibes, France.  In Vancouver she leads and manages Bria’s Hot Five and The Big Bang Jazz Band and performs as a soloist and vocalist with Canadian icon Dal Richards and his Orchestra.  She is the co-founder of the groundbreaking all female jazz group Mighty Aphrodite.  In 2009 she released her first solo album, Fresh, that features original songs plus arrangements of jazz and mainstream standards.  This will be Bria’s fifth appearance at the North Carolina Jazz Festival and will be presenting a trumpet workshop for local music students and educators on Friday afternoon.
